78:100 after the storm

78:100 after the storm

we had the first storm of the winter season yesterday!
it snowed heavy and fast and right away
i had over 7" mid morning with more still
coming down for a couple of hours.
sadly (for snow lovers) the snow changed over to rain
for the rest of the day, thereby compacting
the snow to half it's height.
i heard some around me measured 12" before that.
the good thing about it, is that the heavy snow
packs into perfect snowballs and rolls great snowmen!

i spent the day busily uncooking to prepare for
a volunteer construction job site for fri- sun nite.
i made a double batch of raw smokin' hot chili
i combined 3 recipes and made my own remix.
the secret in there is extra chipotle powder (sizzle!)
then i made some sweet apple cinnamon flax crackers (recipe here)
and a cranberry walnut cashew cheese spread for them... (recipe available here)

i made a black & white savory cracker
and a cheddar bar cheese spread for those crackers.
(recipes will be in raw delights)

i already have a lovely almond granola, crispy corn
chips, spicy cheese-it's.
and with these hot and dense foods i hope to
withstand the cold temperatures we are expect.
i feel my pantry is well stocked today :)
the only thing i might still make are some
chocolate coconut energy balls.

so remember to eat raw food to keep warm!
i always tote along a shaker bottle of cayenne
to add to any foods i wish to warm up
(i even sprinkle it on my salads-WOW!)
till next time

big snow, warm food

we had our big snow yesterday
and it was very exciting to see it fall and fall and fall...
the children were all gleeful as the schools closed down
and they had a wonderful snow day, even moe
the yorkie, had lots of fun bounding in the fluff...
coming in shaking off and begging to go back out again
i can't tell you how i felt about the poor kitchen, sigh.
well at least moe was a happy boy- thru & thru.

so, full of winter giddiness, i decided to make some pot pies
raw food extraordinaire to keep warm and full and happy.
here is the before:

i still had pie crust toppers to add to two bowls
and i popped them in the dehydrator for another 2 hrs
it looked like this finished:

and tasted divine!
THIS is a comfort food, to be sure.
the crust was buttery and flaky tho raw vegan,
and the filling was creamy and tasty. oh yum!
a perfect way to eat winter vegetables.

alas, i just put it together without measuring or writing anything down
(i know, i know, baaad snowdrop!!)
but i intend to make this again real soon-
and this time with documentation
because it really is too good to be missed.

this morning i saw the sun sparkling across the landscape and just for a moment i was in that dr zhivago scene where they wake up in that country place in mid winter. just beautiful!!!!

well that photo looks colder than i remember feeling
when i watched that movie!! :)
i thought i remembered the sun shining ...

enough rambling. i need to get some stuff done here today
else i will never get my book to you!
have a wonderful happy and sparkly day everyone!

how to stay warm???

the first snows of winter are flying.
i love the snow but not the cold-
can't really have one without the other.

how does a raw fooder stay warm in the winter?
ahhh, many ways can help.

i have a wood burning stove that warms me better
than any modern day heating system.
it's soothing crackle warms the soul along with the body.

i warm my food- no need to eat cold raw food!
i do so by both heating the food and by adding heat to the food.
warming it on stove top or in the dehydrator to body temp
or a little bit higher... makes a world of difference.

also by adding cayenne to the recipe- i get a warming
glow as i eat, one that warms me from within.

warming spices:
* Black & white pepper
* Ginger
* Garlic
* Cayenne
* Cloves
* Coriander
* Chives
* Cinnamon
* Caraway
* Parsley
* Turmeric

warming foods

here is a list of foods to keep your body feeling warm.
ancient peoples believed that keeping the body warm came from within
and found that certain foods could raise the body’s temperature:

* Legumes
* Carrots
* Squash
* Parsnips
* Beetroot
* Walnuts
* Coconut
* Dates
* Red pepper
* Pine Nuts
* Chilis

don't forget to keep up on your variety of greens
as they are chock full of vitamins and minerals
thus boosting your immune system keeping you healthy
and full of energy.

i warm my plates, before i put my food on it
this way it doesn't plummet in temperature
from the counter to the table, before i even get one bite in!
what you take in can chill you if it is physically cold
so on those nippy days take care to avoid chilled food & drink
and don't forget to bundle up!
woolly knitted socks and hat are a sensible option

and don't forget to move around, get that blood pumping

all this without turning up the thermostat or eating cooked food!

...of course having a plate of warmed harvest apple crisp never hurt :)
